Don’t forget the Gaylidh is happening this Saturday!

LGBTQ+ History Month is still under way and we still have lots of exciting events coming up!

MONDAY – Coffee evening will be running as usual in Furness TV room at 6pm. Come along for a nice, relaxed social, have a chat with people and have a drink to start your week.

TUESDAY – We’ll be having a stall in Alexandra Square giving out ally ribbons for people who sign the iwsfi pledge and will be asking for donations for action for trans health. Come on down to learn a little about LGBTQ+ culture around the world and surround yourself with rainbows!

WEDNESDAY – Our weekly meeting will be at 5pm in Charles Carter A19. We will be discussing LGBTQ+ History Month and other upcoming socials and campaigns.

THURSDAY – PMS, our LGBTQ+ group for Postgraduate and Mature Students and Staff, will be at 5:30pm in Fylde Bar as usual. This is an opportunity for specifically postgrads, mature students and staff to chat after work.
We will be having our second film screening of history month, this week it’s Saving Face. Furness lecture theatre 2 at 7pm.

FRIDAY – T and Coffee is a trans-specific social meeting for trans people to come together and discuss anything important to them. T and Coffee will be held at 6PM, and if you’re interested in attending, just send us a Facebook message.

SATURDAY – We’re joining up with the Folk Society to run a “Gaylidh” (an LGBTQ+ ceilidh) so come along and join us for a dance or two! It’ll be in George Fox foyer at 7pm till 9:30pm.

This week meeting our main point of discussion was looking at the history of LGBT acronym in the UK and at the University.
It was an interesting conversation about perspectives of it has evolved over time and whether with emerging identities that a set acronym can keep up.

Hello everyone! It’s an exciting time, as we enter the first week of LGBTQ+ History Month! We’ve got lots planned and hope you’ll be able to attend and enjoy one or more of our events!

Monday – Coffee Evening will be at 6PM in Furness TV Room. This is our casual social weekly event where we have a warm drink and a chat. Feel free to bring games or friends!

Tuesday – We’ll be holding a stall in Alexandra Square (weather-dependent), giving information on LGBTQ history and giving out ally ribbons to those who donate and sign the ‘I Won’t Stand For It’ pledge.

Wednesday – We’ll be holding our weekly meeting (location TBC). We’ll be discussing our upcoming plans for the rest of the month, and going into more planning for the Canal Street trip at the end of term! We’ll also be holding a discussion on the LGBTQ+ acronym.

Thursday – The regular meeting of the Postgrad, Mature Student and Staff (PMS) group will be in Fylde Bar at 5:30PM. This is a casual gathering where LGBTQ postgrads, mature students and staff can relax after work, socialise and discuss LGBTQ issues specific to them.

On Thursday evening at 7PM in Furness Lecture Theatre 2, we’ll be watching the film ‘Boys Don’t Cry’, a semi-biographical film about the life of the trans man Brandon Teena. Please note that the film contains content warnings for rape, violence and murder.

Friday – T and Coffee, the social night for trans students, will be on Friday evening at 6PM. If you’re interested in this, please contact us on Facebook (completely confidential).

On Friday evening our Pyjama Party social will begin at 7PM in Bowland North Seminar Room 23. This will be a fairly relaxed social where we let our hair down, watch a movie, paint our nails and wear face masks. All are welcome.

It’s the third week of term! This week there’s elections for our delegates to NUS LGBT Conference, and new members of Liberation Committee, during our usual meeting. The plan for this week is as follows:

Our weekly meeting will be at 5pm in Furness lecture theatre 3. If you’re interested in being one of our delegates for NUS LGBT Conference, the elections will be here (if you can’t attend you are welcome to send in a written hust). We’re also discussing and finalising our plans for LGBTQ History Month, which is all of February – expect detail for socials, campaigns and more!

In addition, we’re planning to hold a Karaoke social in Pendle Bar on Friday night! Details will be confirmed early this week, and we hope to see you there!

During this meeting we had a Gender Grammar Workshop discussing a range of topics including pronouns, gender neutral language and what to do to avoid outing trans people without their permission.

Wednesday 20th January at 5pm in Pendle Sitting Room.

This will be a central part of our campaign to educate people on gender-neutral and trans-friendly language. The workshop will cover gender-neutral language, which pronouns to use, gender-neutral alternatives to common words that may misgender someone, and what to do to avoid outing trans people without their permission. There will be a presentation followed by discussion and questions.

Everyone is welcome to attend – there is no requirement to be part of LGBTQ to do so. If possible for you, please invite your friends.
